New on DVD: Prom Night Collection
Release Date: April 8; Distributor: Alliance Films
Posted on April 8, 2008

It would appear this four-disc collection of the original Prom Night and its three sequels (Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II; Prom Night 3: The Last Kiss; and Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil) are nothing more than a movie tie-in for the upcoming theatrical release of the remake later this week.

As the title suggests, each of these slasher flicks culminate on Hamilton High School’s prom night. Produced between 1980 and 1992, the first film revolves around a series of revenge murders six years after the death of a 10-year-old girl; the second and third resurrect the pissed-off spirit of Mary Lou, a prom queen that met a ghastly and untimely demise; and the final chapter follows the righteous Father Jonas on a killing spree that demonstrates Scream’s rules of survival.

The best of the four films are the middle two. Even though a plot development in the first installment gives a little twist at the end, the buildup to the murders occupies more than half the film. The first sequel is more exciting than its predecessor and ups the creep factor several notches. The third film is even better as it presents a more comedic approach to horror through witty dialogue and a ridiculous plot. The last one is a typical slasher flick, complete with blood, supernatural stalker and a final girl.

While it’s great to have all four films in one DVD box, the presentation is somewhat disappointing. There are no extra features and the menus provide the three basic options (Play, Chapter Selection and Set Up) against a static image. A little more effort would have been appreciated.
