Farley Mowat, Otherwise
Hardcover published by McClelland and Stewart on October 28, 2008.
Posted on November 9, 2008

He has sold more than 14 million books worldwide. His books have been translated into 52 languages. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1981. Few Canadian authors have reached the international stature of Farley Mowat, a writer who has shaped the way Canadians view themselves and the environment.

The author of more than 40 books since 1952, Mowat continues with Otherwise, a memoir of the formative years that shaped him as an author. Set between 1937 and 1948, he chronicles the life that led him to service during the war and the trials he faced trying to fit into post-war Canadian culture. He discusses what directed him to become one of the first environmental activists and how he came to fight the Canadian government for Inuit rights. This account describes the diversity of Mowat’s life in a fashion only he could achieve.

Reputedly, this is Mowat’s last book. At 87-years-old, that is a very strong possibility. But the old entertainers adage is “always leave them wanting more” and Mowat has certainly succeeded here. Fortunately, he has a very large library to read through – there always seems to be more.

” Otherwise” by Farley Mowat brought back memories of an encounter I had with a Polar Bear on the derelict ship near Churchill Manitoba that Mr. Mowat writes about near the beginning of this book. I would sure like to send him the story——–how do I do this?——-Roger

  2. IAN GOODWILLIE (POPJOURNALISM STAFF) says:

If you want to get in touch with Farley Mowat, or any other author, the best thing to do is go through the publisher. They often set up profiles or means by which to contact authors through their site. At the very least, it can get you in touch with some one at the publisher, such as the author’s publicist, who might be able to pass on the message. These practices have become more common in recent years as publishers try to find new ways to connect with fans & book buyers.

And, if all else fails, fan clubs or author websites are also a possibility for contact.

  3. Jessie Smitham says:

Just wondering if Farley Mowat will be doing any book signings or readings for his new book?

  4. Ian Goodwillie says:

Nothing that has been announced yet but do keep two things in mind. First, publishers have greatly scaled their author tours back due to world economic woes. Second, Farley Mowat will be 88 this May and does not get out on tour much. For his last book he did some events around Eastern Canada as he is based out of Port Hope.

I would recommend keeping an eye on his publisher’s website as they generally list tour dates. And always monitor online fan clubs for up-to-date information.
