New on Blu-ray: Maid in Manhattan
Release date: February 2; Distributor: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Posted on March 9, 2010

Jennifer Lopez has had an acting career for about as long as she’s had a singing one, though it may not have been as successful. Nonetheless, Gigli aside, she’s showcased some actual talent on screen.

Marisa (Lopez) is a single mother working as a maid in a prestigious hotel. She has the smarts to move up the corporate ladder, but her mother is short on words of encouragement. One day a friend convinces Marisa she’d look terrific in a chic outfit a guest has asked them to return. However, a handsome soon-to-be senator (Ralph Fiennes) mistakes Marisa for a guest at the hotel and they become entirely taken with each other. Unable to live the lie forever, Marisa can only hope the prince will still want Cinderella.

The story really is a whimsical fairy tale of love at first sight, mistaken identity and beautiful dresses – at least the dog doesn’t talk. The modern take on the classic narrative works in that it’s not too mushy while remaining entirely romantic. The chemistry between Lopez and Fiennes is believable, even if the scenario is not.

The film also takes the time to somewhat develop the characters, though some of the details are used to create a connections between the couple. Marisa has personal barriers to conquer, the politician has beliefs that will not be compromised and Marisa’s son has a strange fascination with U.S. presidents. It’s therefore easier to connect with these characters than one-dimensional versions.

Special feature is a blooper reel.
