After the first four tracks of Paula Atherton’s sophomore album Groove With Me, you get the full breadth of her talent as a major tour-de-force of the smooth jazz genre. Opening with the saucy “Marimba Island,” Atherton shows off her fluid, flute style before careening into the sax, slow-jam “There Ain’t Nothin’.” Following up with the fun-loving “Block Party,” Atherton and her trusty alto pull off some graceful and laid-back melodic lines that she continues to roll out for the remainder of the album. By the fourth track, “Whenever You Come Around” (which borrows a keyboard line from a Spice Girls top-hit), you can’t believe that besides being an adept composer and player, she can sing like the next soul queen. Watch out Mary J. Blige! Ultimately the whole album is full of highlights, but my favourite track is “JB” – her ode to the legendary James Brown. “JB” is the only track that really wanders from Atherton’s precise arrangements as the whole backing band puts on a passionate performance straight from the gut. I agree…the entire CD is wonderful with beautiful melodies and grooves and no doubt Paula’s singing is quite soulful and beautiful as well. My favorite tune also happens to be JB as well as it’s fun and clever, but again, the entire album is wonderful and I enjoy just putting it in and unwinding after a long day. Just beautiful music.
