Today
is an emotional day for actress Cara Pifko. She's filming a tough
scene for the final episode of This is Wonderland's second
season. While we can't go into details (we wouldn't want to get
nasty e-mails from Wonderland fans), Pifko is required to
cry and weaves back and forth from filming to this interview.
Considering all this, she's in remarkably good spirits — friendly,
pleasant and engaging.
Most people would have a hard time making these emotional transitions,
but she is a seasoned pro.
As the lead in This is Wonderland, Pifko has finally found
her breakout role as lawyer Alice De Raey. As Alice, Pifko works
through Wonderland's lower courts system, a world of gray
morality and ethical dilemmas. It's a role that requires Pifko to
work with both humour and heartbreaking drama.
"Some days are harder than others," says Pifko in between
filming. "We're in the business of emotion. I work on two shows,
really — one on screen and the other on set.
"Sometimes I'm not sure which one is real," she laughs.
At just 28 years old, Pifko is already a Canadian television veteran,
having appeared on Road to Avonlea, Our Hero and the
Gemini Award winning mini-series Human Cargo. She landed
her first role at the age of three, singing on Sharon, Lois &
Bram's Elephant Show.
"I came into the business at a young age, but I think [acting]
was always in me," she says. "I have a memory of doing
ballet when I was four. I did a dance with the toys to bring them
to life. I remember that experience very clearly; in my memory,
even though it was a small production, I thought were were doing
Swan Lake.
"I think that's when the acting bug bit... That's when the
poison seeped in."
