'Baretta' actor Robert Blake acquitted of murder

POSTED ON MARCH 17, 2005

After a much-publicized trial, actor Robert Blake was found not guilty of murder.

On Wednesday, due to lack of reliable evidence, Blake was acquitted of killing his wife four years ago. Blake potentially faced life in prison.

The trial took place over four months and jurors took nine days to deliver their verdict.

Blake was charged with shooting his 44-year-old wife, Bonny Lee Bakley, in their car outside of a restaurant in 2001. They were married for less than six months at the time.

Bakley’s daughter said outside of court that her family plans to proceed with a wrongful death lawsuit.

Blake has been an actor since childhood. He is most famous for his role as the title character in TV’s Baretta. He played a street-wise detective whose catch phrase was "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time."
