Controversial country trio the Dixie Chicks have cancelled several of their tour dates, mostly in the southern U.S., due to poor ticket sales.

The Chicks' "Accidents & Accusations" updated tour schedule nixes planned concerts in Kansas City, Memphis, Tampa and Houston, among 14 stops cancelled. Shows in markets like Los Angeles and Nashville have been pushed back to later dates, but to make up for the dropped shows, new concerts have been added including an additional performance in Calgary and a new show in Regina.

"We hope that our fans who were looking forward to a stop that is no longer on the tour will be able to join us at a nearby arena this fall, and we are sorry for any confusion or inconvenience these changes have caused,'' the Dixie Chicks said in a statement.

Soft tour sales were somewhat expected for the group, as mountains of negative press and a U.S country radio boycott have affected the trio following a March 2003 concert in Europe. During that infamous concert, lead singer Natalie Maines commented between songs that the group was "ashamed the President of the United States” was from Texas. A documentary about the trio's experience during this time will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

However, unlike the tour, negative press has not impacted U.S. sales of their latest album, Taking the Long Way, which topped the charts and has shipped more than one million copies in just over two months.
