DJ Kwe featuring Brenda MacIntyre, "My Spirit is Rising"
REVIEWED BY ROBERT BALLANTYNE, POSTED ON JULY 21, 2006

The worlds of house and Aboriginal music collide in an innovative single by DJ Kwe and Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Brenda MacIntyre. "My Spirit is Rising" features traditional chants by MacIntyre and DJ Kwe's sultry spoken vocals over warm instrumentation and a heavy, heartbeat-like kick beat. The result is a sexy, club-oriented dance track that's oddly tranquil as well. If both were to continue exploring this musical direction, their sound would fit nicely in the club, world and adult contemporary music scenes. Though the "Rising" five-minute radio edit would be more appealing to commercial radio if it were trimmed down by another minute or so, it is promising nonetheless. In fact, it would be interesting to hear how MacIntyre’s staid album, Thunder Mountain Healing Songs, would sound re-interpreted with DJ Kwe ("Rising" is available as a bonus track on Thunder and on DJ Kwe's album The Electronic Drum). "My Spirit is Rising" suggests the two should consider working together again in the future. (Independent)
