I fell
hard for Goldfrapp's Supernature, a sly and stylish
electro-pop record that hasn't left my iPod since its UK
release last August — which was issued in North
America earlier this year. The album obviously hit a nerve
on this side of the ocean, too, because the Supernature remix
collection We Are Glitter, is being released simultaneously
here and in the UK.
But if the idea of a remix collection doesn't instantly make
you want to rush to the record store, I understand. However,
unlike the by-the-numbers mixes issued to the clubs lately,
Goldfrapp are one of the few acts whose tracks inspire dazzling
club creations from remixers. Glitter presents
eleven of the best commissions, plus a new
remix by the group of "Strict Machine" from 2003's Black
Cherry.
Fortunately, the remixes in Glitter are
rarely 4/4 beat club exercises (except perhaps the Benny
Benassi remix of "Ooh La La") and usually take unexpected,
revelatory turns. The first track, a chilled remix of "Satin
Chic" by the Shortwave Set, is an obvious highlight, as are
the dream-pop takes on "Number 1" and "You Never Know" by
Iceland's Num. My favourite long-form club remixes include
the industrial version of "Lovely 2 C U" by T. Raumschmiere
and the sly DFA remix of "Slide In." Unfortunately,
the club remixes of Supernature's best cut "Number
1" were dismal, though the Alan
Braxe & Fred
Falke mix included here was the pick of a poor
lot.
While Glitter is unlikely to make new converts, fans
that fell in love with Supernature will find a
treasure trove here. It's all killer and no filler — with
no extra import duties applied. (Mute) |
